Cookie policy

Today this site sets no cookies and loads no analytics, which is why it shows you no cookie banner: there's nothing to accept. YouTube videos load nothing until you press play, and affiliate links take you to third-party websites with their own cookies. Here are the details, following the cookie guidance of the AEPD, Spain's data protection authority.

What cookies are and why I also talk about local storage

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser to remember something. Local storage (localStorage) does the same in another way. The law treats them alike: Article 22(2) of Spain's LSSI-CE requires sites to inform you and ask for your consent before using them, unless they're strictly necessary for the service you request.

The AEPD's Guide on the use of cookies (in Spanish), in the version updated in May 2024, applies those rules to any device that stores and retrieves data, not just classic cookies. That's why the table also lists what this site could store in local storage.

I use no advertising cookies, no social media pixels and no third-party plugins. Links to YouTube, Instagram or Discord are plain links: they load nothing from those platforms until you click. Fonts, video thumbnails and images are served from my own server.

Analytics: switched off, and what would happen if I turned it on

Google Analytics is switched off and its code isn't loaded on any page. That's why you see no cookie banner and no “Cookie preferences” link in the footer: there's no cookie that needs your consent.

If I ever decide to measure visits, I'll do three things first: update this policy and the privacy policy with the cookie table and retention periods; show you a banner with Accept and Reject buttons of the same size and on the same level, as the AEPD guide requires; and set no analytics cookie until you accept. Continuing to browse won't count as acceptance, and you'll be able to change your mind at any time from the footer.

Your choice would be stored in your browser's local storage under the name ca-consent. It's a preference you choose and it serves only that purpose, so, under the AEPD guide's criteria for user-chosen preferences, it's exempt from consent.

YouTube videos: nothing until you press play

Videos are embedded using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). Before you press play you only see a thumbnail hosted on my server: neither the player nor any YouTube code is loaded.

When you press play, I load the player because you asked for it. From then on YouTube may use cookies or local storage in your browser under its own responsibility and according to Google's privacy policy. Google explains in its help on embedded videos that, in this mode, the view isn't used to personalize your YouTube experience or the ads you see outside this site.

Affiliate links: cookies on third-party websites

The links to OKX, Ledger and Trezor are labeled “Advertising” and carry the rel="sponsored" attribute. Clicking one sets nothing from this site: it takes you to that company's website. Once there, the company may use cookies or an identifier included in the link itself to know you came from my site and pay me the commission, on top of the cookies it uses for its own purposes.

Those cookies belong to the company, not to me, and are governed by its cookie and privacy policy. It's the company that must inform you and, where required, ask for your consent on its website. If you don't want your visit linked to my referral, type its address straight into your browser: the price is the same. Why I use affiliate links and how I label them is explained in the legal notice.

More information and changes

Retention periods, international transfers and how to exercise your rights are in the privacy policy; the owner's details are in the legal notice. If anything the site uses changes, I'll update this table first and, if needed, ask for your consent.

FAQ /

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't this site show me a cookie banner?

Because today it sets no cookie that needs your consent: there's no analytics and no advertising. The only possible cookies are YouTube's, which only load if you press play, and those of the third-party websites you reach through a link. If I ever turn on analytics, you'll see the banner before anything is set.

Can I use the site without accepting cookies?

Yes, and in fact there's nothing to accept. You can read every page without any cookie being set. Only if you play a video may YouTube use its own.

What cookies does YouTube set when I watch a video?

Google decides, and it can change over time. It only happens after you press play, and Google describes them on its page about how it uses cookies. If you don't want any, don't play the videos here.

What cookies do the affiliate links use?

None from this site. When you click, you land on the OKX, Ledger or Trezor website, which may use its own cookies to credit your sign-up or purchase to my link. Each company explains this in its cookie policy, which it has to show you on its website.
