OKX review 2026: is OKX safe? MiCA license, fees and tutorial

OKX is the exchange I use and number one in my ranking of MiCA-licensed exchanges. Here's why, including what usually goes unsaid: which company actually serves you if you live in Spain or elsewhere in the EU, what it really charges, how to use it step by step and what fines it picked up in 2025.

My OKX verdict in 30 seconds

If you live in Spain and want to buy crypto with euros on an authorized platform, OKX does the job: it holds a MiCA license in Malta with a passport for Spain, it doesn't charge for SEPA deposits and its entry-level fees sit at the low end of the market. It isn't the cheapest of all or the simplest, and its regulatory record has recent stains you should know about before you hand it your money.

What I look atOKX in October 2026
LicenseOKX Europe Ltd, authorized by the MFSA (Malta) on January 27, 2025; allowed to operate in Spain since November 27, 2025
Entry-level spot fee0.20% maker / 0.35% taker
Euro depositsSEPA and SEPA Instant with no OKX fee (your bank might charge you)
Proof of reservesMonthly, according to OKX; report number 48 is from October 2026
Recent sanctionsUnited States, Malta and the Netherlands, all in 2025
Who it's forPeople who want a full-featured, low-cost exchange and know how to ignore the derivatives
Data checked on October 17, 2026 in ESMA's register, the CNMV's list and OKX's official pages for the European Economic Area.

“The exchange I use” isn't decoration: I've been putting it in my video descriptions since late August 2026, with the affiliate link right next to it. That's exactly why this page puts it under the microscope, sanctions included.

Is OKX legal and safe in Spain? The license in detail

Let's start with what matters. In ESMA's interim register, OKX Europe Limited, based in Sliema (Malta), is listed as a crypto-asset service provider authorized by the MFSA since January 27, 2025. It may provide almost every MiCA service: custody, operating a trading platform, exchanging crypto for euros and for other crypto, executing orders, placing, receiving and transmitting orders, portfolio management and transfers. The only thing it doesn't have is advice.

A license in Malta isn't enough to serve you: it needs the passport. The CNMV's list of providers (in Spanish) includes OKX Europe Limited as a “PSC en régimen de LP”, a passported provider, with Malta as its home country, and sets November 27, 2025 as the date from which it may provide MiCA services in Spain. So when the transitional period ended at the end of June 2026, OKX was already in good standing here. If you live in another EU country, look for your country's code in the same row of ESMA's register.

Two caveats that matter. First, the license belongs to that specific company. If you ever sign up with another company in the group, MiCA's protection doesn't come along, so check your terms to see who you're contracting with. Second, derivatives aren't covered by the MiCA license. OKX's X-Perps are offered by OKX Europe Markets Limited, authorized by the MFSA under Malta's investment services law, which is a different regime. In July 2025, ESMA asked exchanges not to use their MiCA license as a selling point or to imply that it covers products outside its scope, and I think it's fair to apply that rule here.

And some context about the supervisor. In July 2025, ESMA published a review of how the MFSA had authorized a crypto provider, without saying which one, and concluded that some material issues weren't fully resolved when the license was granted, although it highlighted the Maltese supervisor's technical expertise. That's not an accusation against OKX. It is a reminder that a license is a minimum, not a seal of excellence.

OKX fees in 2026

In the European Economic Area, what you pay at OKX depends on your VIP tier, which is based on the assets you hold in your account or on your trading volume over the last 30 days, both measured in euros. For almost everyone, the tier is the standard one:

ItemCostComment
Spot, standard tier0.20% maker / 0.35% takerWhat you'll almost certainly pay
Spot, VIP10.10% / 0.20%From €100,000 in assets or more than €100,000 in 30-day volume
Spot with an X-Perps account0.08% / 0.10%Requires opening a derivatives account and passing an appropriateness test
Convert and simple buyNo fee lineThe cost is built into the quoted price (spread)
SEPA and SEPA Instant deposits€0 on OKX's sideSEPA Instant arrives in seconds, up to €100,000
Card paymentVariableThe fee is shown in the payment method before you confirm
Crypto withdrawalsNetwork feeDepends on the coin and the network; you see it before you confirm
Checked on October 17, 2026 on OKX's official EEA pages (spot fee table published on May 18, 2026 and revised on August 5, 2026). Fees change: check them before you trade.

My take: the 0.35% taker fee isn't the lowest in Europe (Revolut X charges 0.09% and Bitvavo 0.25%), but it sits below the first tier at Kraken, Coinbase or Bit2Me Pro. And you can bring it down to 0.20% with limit orders that wait in the book, without opening anything unusual.

The 0.08% rate deserves its own paragraph. OKX reserves it for people who open an X-Perps account, contracts with leverage of up to 10x designed, according to OKX itself, for experienced traders. Going from 0.35% to 0.10% on a 500-euro purchase saves you 1.25 euros. Opening the door to products that can wipe out your money very quickly isn't worth that saving if your plan is to buy and hold.

And watch out for Convert. OKX explains in its help pages that it doesn't charge a separate fee, but that the quoted price includes a spread that depends on the trade size, volatility and liquidity at that moment, and it recommends comparing it with the market price before you confirm. For amounts that matter to you, the spot market with a limit order works out cheaper. I compare it with the other platforms in how to buy bitcoin in Spain.

How to use OKX step by step

In my OKX tutorial I do everything on screen: creating the account, verifying your identity, buying with euros, sending and receiving crypto, swapping it and trading. These are the steps that matter to get started, with the minute in the video where each one appears:

My full OKX tutorial, in Spanish like all my videos: sign-up (01:13), verification (05:08), buying with euros (05:41), transfers (08:36) and swaps (12:36).August 1, 2026· 566 views Loads from youtube-nocookie.com only when you press play.
Chapters (9)
  1. 01

    Create the account (01:13)

Sign up on the official website or in the app, with a long password you don't use anywhere else. From the start, turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app and the anti-phishing code: OKX includes it in its emails, and an email without it is almost certainly fake.

  2. 02

    Verify your identity (05:08)

OKX asks for your country of residence, nationality, name, date of birth, document type and number, and address. Then a photo of your official ID document, no screenshots and with all four corners visible, a selfie and, if they ask for it, proof of address from the last six months. It says it reviews this in under 24 hours.

  3. 03

    Deposit euros by SEPA

In “Assets”, go to “Deposit” and choose cash, euros and SEPA transfer. It will give you an IBAN: copy it into your bank exactly as it appears, without trimming it. The sending account has to be in your name; if you send from PayPal, Wise or someone else's account, the money gets returned. With SEPA Instant it arrives in seconds; a regular transfer takes one or two business days.

  4. 04

    Buy your first crypto (05:41)

For a small first purchase, the buy button is the easiest option. If the amount is serious, go to the spot market, for example BTC/EUR, and use a limit order: you set the maximum price and pay the maker fee instead of the taker fee.

  5. 05

    Convert between cryptos (12:36)

Convert swaps one crypto for another at a fixed price. It's convenient, but the spread is built in and, for the Spanish tax agency, swapping one crypto for another is a taxable swap (a permuta) even if you never touch euros.

  6. 06

    Send to your wallet (08:36)

In “Withdraw”, choose the coin, paste the address copied from your wallet and pick the same network your wallet supports. Do a small test transfer first and, if you withdraw more than 1,000 euros, be ready to prove that the wallet is yours.

If you decide to try it, you can open your OKX account and follow the video at the same time, with your finger on the pause button. The advanced trading (16:32) and leverage (23:57) chapters are for people who already know what they're doing; to buy and hold, you don't need them. And what I say in the video description is meant seriously: OKX's terms, fees and services can change, so always check the latest information before you trade.

Moving your crypto from OKX to your own wallet

As long as your crypto sits in your account, OKX holds it in custody. For anything you won't move soon, my recommendation is the usual one: your own wallet and, if the amount is serious, a hardware wallet bought from the official store. OKX also has a separate self-custody wallet, OKX Wallet, which isn't the same thing as your exchange account: there, the keys are yours.

  • The network is what counts. If you send over a network your wallet doesn't support, you can lose access to the funds. Check the network on both sides before you confirm.
  • The full address. Copy it from the wallet, not from your history, and compare all of it: some attacks slip addresses into your history that look almost identical to the ones you use.
  • Withdrawal allowlist. OKX lets you limit withdrawals to addresses you approve. Turn it on: if someone gets into your account, they won't be able to send your funds to theirs.
  • First transfer, small. A minimal amount, wait for it to arrive, then the rest. Yes, you pay the network fee twice, but it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

In the MetaMask tutorial I show you how to move funds from the exchange to the wallet and back without losing them along the way, and in the cold versus hot wallet video, which one suits you depending on how much you hold. If you're not sure which hardware wallet to buy, here's my comparison of the best cold wallets.

Security: proof of reserves and what it doesn't tell you

OKX has published proof of reserves since November 2022 and, according to its proof of reserves page, it updates it every month. In October 2026 it was on report number 48, with $29.4 billion in main assets and reserve ratios of 110% for bitcoin, 100% for ether and 105% for USDT. It uses a Merkle tree with zk-STARK proofs, so you can check that your balance is included without anyone seeing anyone else's.

Now, what that figure doesn't say. It's a snapshot of assets at a given moment, using OKX's own data and covering all of its companies worldwide, not just the European one. And proof of reserves isn't a full audit: it shows what the company holds, not everything it owes. It's better than nothing, and for several licensed exchanges I couldn't find any, but don't treat it as a guarantee.

As for hacks, I haven't found any theft of customer funds from the OKX exchange. There was trouble around it, though: in March 2025 it suspended OKX Wallet's decentralized exchange aggregator after detecting that it had been used by Lazarus, the North Korean group blamed for the Bybit theft, and it reactivated it in May with blocking of hacker addresses.

The downsides: the 2025 sanctions

This is the part many OKX reviews skip. In 2025 it was sanctioned in three countries:

WhenWhoWhat happened
February 2025US federal prosecutors (Southern District of New York)Aux Cayes FinTech, the company that runs OKX globally, pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to pay more than $504 million: an $84.4 million fine and $420.3 million in forfeiture. It will have an outside compliance consultant until February 2027.
April 2025FIAU (Malta's anti-money-laundering unit)A fine of €1,054,269 on OKCoin Europe Ltd for anti-money-laundering shortcomings found in an April 2023 inspection. The FIAU acknowledged the fixes it made afterwards, but also imposed a follow-up order.
May 2025 (published in September)DNB (the Dutch central bank)A €2.25 million fine on Aux Cayes FinTech for offering crypto services in the Netherlands without the mandatory registration between July 2023 and August 2024.
Sources: the US prosecutor's press release, the FIAU publication notice (April 2025) and the DNB notice (September 3, 2025).

How do I read it? None of the three has cost OKX Europe its MiCA license, which is still in the ESMA and CNMV registers, and all three punish events from before 2025. But together they paint a picture of a company that for years grew faster than it complied with the rules, and a new license doesn't erase that.

That's why I won't tell you “it's safe”, full stop. I'll tell you that today it's authorized, supervised and publishes proof of reserves, and that its past is a good reason not to keep all your eggs in one basket: whatever you won't use is better off outside the exchange.

OKX pros and cons

The good

  • A MiCA license you can verify with ESMA and the CNMV, with a passport for Spain.
  • Low entry-level fees for such a full-featured exchange: 0.20% maker and 0.35% taker.
  • Euro deposits by SEPA and SEPA Instant with no OKX fee.
  • Monthly proof of reserves with a Merkle tree and zk-STARK proofs.
  • A website in Spanish and a full tutorial you can follow step by step.

The bad

  • Three sanctions in 2025, in the United States, Malta and the Netherlands.
  • The lowest rate requires opening a derivatives account.
  • An app loaded with risky products (futures, bots, “earn”) that you don't need to buy and hold.
  • Convert and the simple buy hide the cost in the spread.
  • Custody from Malta: if you're a tax resident in Spain and your holdings with foreign custodians top 50,000 euros on December 31, you'll have to file Form 721.

MiCA-licensed alternatives to OKX

If anything above puts you off, there are authorized options for every profile. I compare them with fees, dates and drawbacks in the ranking of the best MiCA-licensed exchanges, but here's the short version:

  • Cheapest on the order book: Revolut X (0% maker and 0.09% taker) or Bitvavo (0.15% and 0.25%).
  • A Spanish company supervised by the CNMV: Bit2Me, better through Bit2Me Pro (0.50% and 0.60%) than through its simple buy.
  • Flat rate: Bybit EU, 0.25% on spot since October 5, 2026.
  • Long-established brands: Kraken and Coinbase, solid but pricier in their first tier.
  • Simple apps: Bitpanda or eToro, in exchange for paying between 0.99% and 1.49% per trade.

In my video on the 3 best MiCA-licensed exchanges, I give you my recommendation for your situation, with the pros and cons of each one.

OKX and Spanish taxes: what you need to know

OKX doesn't withhold anything or file your return for you. If you're a tax resident in Spain, when you sell or swap one crypto for another you report the gain or loss yourself in your personal income tax return (IRPF), in the savings base, at rates from 19% to 30%, applying the FIFO rule: the first coins you bought are the first ones considered sold.

Because OKX Europe holds custody from Malta, it counts as a foreign custodian for Form 721: if on December 31 the total of your crypto with custodians outside Spain exceeds 50,000 euros, you have to file it between January 1 and March 31. On top of that, under the DAC8 directive, which has applied since January 1, 2026, providers collect your transaction data so that it reaches each country's tax authorities. Download your OKX history every year and keep it. All the details are in crypto taxes in Spain.

FAQ /

Frequently asked questions

Is OKX safe?

It's an exchange authorized under MiCA (OKX Europe Ltd, supervised by Malta's MFSA), it publishes monthly proof of reserves and I haven't found any theft of customer funds from its exchange. On the other hand, in 2025 it racked up sanctions in the United States, Malta and the Netherlands for earlier conduct. No exchange is completely safe: for long-term storage, your own wallet is the better place.

Is OKX legal in Spain?

Yes. OKX Europe Limited has held a MiCA license from the MFSA since January 27, 2025 and, according to the CNMV's list, it has been allowed to provide MiCA services in Spain since November 27, 2025. You can check it yourself in ESMA's interim register and the CNMV's list of providers by searching for the company name, not the brand. Elsewhere in the EU, look for your country's code in ESMA's register.

What fees does OKX charge in Spain?

On spot, the standard tier pays 0.20% as maker and 0.35% as taker, checked on October 17, 2026. With an X-Perps derivatives account it drops to 0.08% and 0.10%, but that requires an appropriateness test. SEPA deposits are free on OKX's side, Convert carries its cost in the spread and crypto withdrawals pay the network fee.

How do I deposit euros into OKX?

By SEPA transfer from an account in your name: in Deposit, choose cash, euros and SEPA, and copy the IBAN that OKX shows you into your bank. With SEPA Instant it arrives in seconds, up to 100,000 euros; a regular transfer takes one or two business days. OKX doesn't charge for the deposit, although your bank might charge you for the transfer.

Why did OKX pay more than $500 million in the United States?

In February 2025, Aux Cayes FinTech, the company that runs OKX globally, pleaded guilty to operating as an unlicensed money transmitter with US customers and agreed to pay more than $504 million between the fine and the forfeiture. It doesn't affect OKX Europe's European license, but it's part of its record and you should know about it.

Do I have to file Form 721 if I use OKX?

Only if you're a tax resident in Spain and, on December 31, the total of your crypto with foreign custodians, OKX included, exceeds 50,000 euros. OKX Europe holds custody from Malta, so it counts as foreign. The filing window runs from January 1 to March 31 of the following year. What you keep in your own wallet doesn't count toward Form 721.
